Tara Elta is a physician assistant who has successfully completed an accredited education program for physician assistant, is licensed by the state and is practicing neurocritical care and vascular neurology. Tara was formally trained to perform many of the tasks that a physician can do. In our NeuroICU, she assesses patients, prescribes medications and assists in performing time critical procedures. Tara takes detailed medical histories, performs thorough physical exams, orders lab tests, x-rays, brain and spine imaging, and gives emergent therapies for reduction of pressure due to brain swelling in qualifying trauma and stroke victims. As in many states, Tara works under the supervision of a neurointensivist.
Prior to that Tara worked as a Medical assistant performing administrative and clinical tasks to keep the office of multiple physicians running smoothly. Her duties varied from answering telephones, greeting patients, updating and filing patients' medical records, filling out insurance forms, handling correspondence, scheduling appointments, arranging for hospital admission and laboratory services, and handling billing and bookkeeping to taking medical histories and recording vital signs, explaining treatment procedures to patients, preparing patients for examination, and assisting the physician during the examination. This experience as well as the commitment that she has demonstrated to caring for patients has prepared her well for her continued work within our neurocritical care unit.
